"Rapid, High-Temperature Microwave Synthesis of Useful Materials"
Professor Ram Seshadri – Materials Department and Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, Santa Barbara
Host: Douglas Reed
I will introduce assisted microwave methods for high-temperature reactions and describe how they have accelerated the preparation of phosphor, thermoelectric, magnetic, and battery materials in my research group over the years. In contrast to microwave heating for solution reactions, these are techniques that employ domestic (≈$100) microwave ovens to readily achieve temperatures as high as 1400°C in minutes. In this talk, I will focus on the preparation of battery electrodes materials for Li–ion and Na–ion batteries. I will close with a description of how these microwave methods are being scaled for industrial use.
Ram Seshadri received a Ph.D. in solid state chemistry in 1995 from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, working with Professor C. N. R. Rao FRS. After some years as a postdoctoral fellow in Caen, France and Mainz, Germany, he returned to IISc in 1999 to start his independent career as an assistant professor. He moved to the Materials Department in the College of Engineering at UC Santa Barbara in 2002. In 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Distinguished Professor in the Materials Department and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He is the Fred and Linda R. Wudl Professor of Materials Science and has served as the Director of the Materials Research Laboratory: A National Science Foundation Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (NSF-MRSEC) since 2015. He recently took on the additional role of associate dean for research in the College of Engineering. His research contributions are embodied in 450+ journal publication, and broadly addresses the topic of structure–composition–property relations in functional, crystalline inorganic and hybrid materials. Ram is the editor of Annual Reviews of Materials Research and is a lead editor of Physical Review Materials.
